Learning Lab Background & Purpose:

In order to end the impacts of systemic racism on health equity, LPHI seeks to increase the state’s capacity to address systemic barriers and social inequities that impact Black, Indigenous and People of Color’s (BIPOC) opportunity to attain their full health potential. To effectively begin this work, we must build the capacity of organizations and individuals to understand the role racism plays in achieving health equity.

Members of the 2022 Learning Lab cohort will participate in foundational training that increases knowledge of equity principles, and how the social determinants of health impact the health of Louisianans. Participants will also be provided with capacity-building opportunities to build skills to apply equity concepts to address these social determinants of health.

Additionally, the cohort will have the opportunity to participate in a grant development process to implement a community project that will address a community health issue and will have the opportunity to have their project considered for funding and support beyond the duration of the cohort.

LPHI’s hope is to empower and equip cohort members to become change agents in their community and organizations.

As a collective, participants in this opportunity will:

  • Advance leadership skills through increased knowledge, ability, and practice of health equity

  • Develop a deeper understanding, compassion, and motivation to leverage leadership skills for action around issues of equity and fairness in the communities we serve

  • Integrate principles of equity and racial justice into all elements of their leadership practice, including developing personal, institutional, and structural-level approaches to equity

  • Develop long-term relationships and collaborations with peers to identify and implement next steps and strategies toward achieving goals

  • Receive guidance and support for applying knowledge and creating new community projects that support local change efforts
